Transition Soffit & Facia from Eaves to Gable by Building a Box
Gable End Box
When I was installing the soffit and facia I ran into trouble when I got to the eaves end. Where the eave end met the gable end I had no idea how to transition the soffit and facia to go up the gable end. I never realized how a gable end box was built.
Having never installed soffit or facia, I was stumped. Luckily, my friend showed up and led the way.
The gable end box is constructed using F-Channel to start.
The F-Channel is nailed to the house and extended out to the edge of the gable end. F-channel is then bent 90 degrees and extended towards the roof rafter. To bend the F-Channel simply cut notches in the two fingers of the F and bend. Attach the F-Channel to the roof rafter with a nail or screw. Once you get to this point you should be realizing how the gable end box is coming together.
Gable End Box Notes
- Install all runs of Soffit first
- Nail F Channel to the house and bend 90 degrees to connect to the roof rafter at the gable end
- F-Channel only needs one 90 degree bend
- Facia needs two 90 degree bends to complete the gable end box
- Required tools are:
- sheet metal shears
- hammer
- drill
- rivet squeezer
- Rivet the facia box end to the F-Channel
Wrapping the Facia around the Gable End Box
After all the soffit is installed on the eaves end and the gable end continue on with facia installation.
The Facia can be attached using rivets and nails.
Bending Facia to finish the Gable End Box
Facia is nailed to the facia board and wrapped around the gable end box.
To make the bends around the gable end box cut 45 degree angles into the lip of the facia panel. Use the corner of a piece of wood to bend the facia 90 degrees. The two 45 degree angles should then line up and mate together. This does not have to be perfect.
